ตะวันส่องใสแดดฉายลงมาทาบทาทิวทุ่ง |
The sun sheds its bright rays, resplendently painting the vast open fields. The zephyr blows gently, scenting the air like the sweet and uplifting scent of dry rice flowers. Twinkling are those star-shaped grass flowerslimpid and dewystrewing about along the clay paths Looking like a thousand drops of gems. With mere touch, those gem-like dews are all drizzling dazzlingly onto the ground. |

จะอยู่แดนไหนสุดฟ้าแสนไกลคนึงถึงถิ่น |
No matter where we are, far and away or at the end of the horizon, We always miss our motherland from which we long parted. Are those gorgeous grass posies still as gracious? Or are they now all withered away? The heat is burning in the air The soil, dry and cracked The hot and noisy drought wind rustling inertly over the land grieves the woods and the mountains. |

With fervent enthusiasm we summoned up all the strength and mind power to rekindle the fire within. Yet, the more we build, the more we toil through thick and thin, The more we seem to have to stagger along the path of life, The more our morale and spirits are waning away days and nights. We were thus coerced to desert the fields and move along. Time passed; we feel as if we were journeying listlessly to a faraway place. |

The sun once again sheds its new rays that permeate our dark paths. We as a reunited phalanx feeling as one brave all the challenges and perils. Our hearts, my beloved friends, are as bold and intrepid as the sunflowers Whose sheer dreams radiate resolutely amidst the ever-shining sun's golden beams. |

SEA Write poet Khun Naowarat
Pongpaiboon composes Taan Tawon lyrics so meticulously and impeccably that it
is beyond compare. This lyrical poesy discusses the influx of labor migration
from the country into the metropolis with the hope to try their luck there.
Though at times they've encountered life's wretchedness, destitution, and
ill-fated hand-to-mouth existence, they never give up hope; their morale is
still firm and unshaken. The Ratanakosin's poet uses the sunflowers as a
simile, likening their hope and morale to the sunflowers. The Thai word ทาน
in ทานตะวัน means ทานท้า (impervious) and ทานทน (endure). The poet sees the
sunflower as an extraordinary kind of flower, that is, (unlike other kinds of
flowers,) it can stand up to and endure the scorching heat of the sun. The rhyme scheme the poet uses--which I'd like to call "Glon 12"--produces such smooth and delicate sounds hither and yon throughout the poem and fits snugly with those simple-yet-glorious words, most of which are genuinely Thai, that he carefully selected for his composition. Meaningful, sparkling with striking imagery, and invaluably precious, this poem, in my view, is the greatest and beyond words. |

| Translation Note: | Ratanakosin's poet sage Naowarat Pongpaiboon is the master of words. Each and every word he selected to use in this poem is simple but beautiful and succinct and profoundly meaningful. When translated into English, the destination text can't avoid being bloated. Nonetheless, I did try my best--so much that my head was almost split in two--in rendering this beloved piece of poetry into Thai while equally maintaining the original poetic registries of both texts. |
